Recalling earlier this month, about June 1-2, the BAYELSA state government held it's monthly transparency briefing.
During the briefing, the Bayelsa state government said it inherited a N342billion debt from the previous administration of Chief Timipre Sylva.

The government stated, it had spent about N123 billion between 2012 till date on servicing of debts, including bonds and foreign loans obtained by the administration of Chief Timipre Sylva.

Explaining how the #123bn debt has been paid, the state Deputy Governor, Gboribiogha John Jonah, said the state government has paid a total of N62 billion on bonds obtained by the Sylva's administration, while over N61 billion has so far been deducted at source by the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee, FAAC, for loans and over-payments.

also lamented on its inability to pay workers salary and meet financial obligations of the state on the N342billion debt inheritance.
He explained that the total debt was expected to be paid off in June 2017.

In another recent transparency briefing held yesterday, 20th June 2016. The BAYELSA state Government has once again blamed it's inadequacies on Timipre Sylva's administration.
Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, yesterday revealed that his government has only received N95bn from the Federation Account in the last one year.

He said, in the last one year, the sum of N14.89bn was used to service bond repayments taken by former governor Timipre Sylva, while salaries of workers consumed N32.38bn.
He further said bank loans gulped about N15bn, local debts including inherited debts and overdraft N24.6bn, overhead costs for running the three arms of government N3.9bn while the sum of N20.9bn went to projects.

“N1.2billion and N1.3 billion monthly were not excess deductions, as been circulated in some quarters, Those were debts incurred by an incompetent and shameless government under Timipre Sylva, who is still inciting criminal youths to disturb the peace of the state. In January, 2016, the state got N7 billion but a N3 billion 419 loan incurred by Sylva was deducted. In February, we got N6 billion but N3 billion was deducted. In March, N5 billion came but loan of N3.3 billion was deducted" he added.

The Governor also lambasted journalists operating in the state, accusing them of hiding under press freedom to work with criminal syndicates, thieves and cult leaders.
The Governor who was visibly angry made use of some vulgar words, he warned them not to take the hospitality of the state and his government for granted, saying his administration had neither killed nor physically attacked anybody.
The governor also expressed anger over some reports in the national dailies, claiming that his administration was monitoring text messages and telephone conversations between the journalists and their paymasters, he denied such.
The Governor also expressed commitment in developing Bayelsa state, he appealed to the striking lecturers of Niger delta university to go back to their classes.
