Police Inspector Killed by Suspected Kidnappers During Rescue Operation in Oyo State
Nigeria’s ongoing battle against criminal violence has taken another tragic turn in Oyo State, where a police inspector was killed in the line of duty while responding to a distress call about a kidnapping attempt. The incident, confirmed by the Oyo State Police Command, occurred during a rescue effort that had begun as a routine response to an abduction report.
According to a statement by DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the Police Public Relations Officer, officers were called to Olorunda Village in Ojongbodu, Oyo West Local Government Area after reports of suspected kidnappers storming a home and seizing a resident. In the ensuing attempt to rescue the victim — identified as Haruna Lawal — the police team was ambushed by armed assailants.
In the fierce confrontation, the inspector lost his life while bravely engaging the suspects, with the attackers reportedly escaping. Lawal, who was injured during the original abduction, was rushed to General Hospital in Oyo for treatment and is receiving medical care.
The Oyo State command has launched a manhunt for the suspected kidnappers, with senior police leadership directing patrols and investigations to track down those involved. Authorities are urging local residents to cooperate with security forces by reporting any suspicious activity that might lead to arrests and improved community safety.
This incident adds to a series of security challenges in Oyo State, where law enforcement has been actively contending with kidnappings, ambushes, and other violent crimes. Recent efforts by the police command include rescuing abducted victims and intercepting illegal activities, reflecting a sustained campaign to protect lives and curb criminal networks across the state.
The loss of an officer in the line of duty underscores both the dangers confronting security personnel and the urgent need for strengthened responses to organised crime in parts of southwestern Nigeria.
