Insecurity: Tinubu to Meet Council of State, Police Council Thursday
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has summoned a high-level strategic meeting involving the Council of State and the Police Council, set for Thursday, October 9, 2025, to confront Nigeria’s escalating insecurity.
🕑 Agenda & Participants
-
The meeting is scheduled to be hybrid (both in-person & virtual) at the Council Chambers, Aso Villa, Abuja.
-
Two sessions are planned:
• Council of State meeting at 1:00 p.m.
• Police Council meeting at 2:00 p.m. -
Key participants are expected to include former presidents, the Chief Justice, governors, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), service chiefs, and other relevant security and governance officials.
-
The invitation was issued by SGF George Akume, through the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).
🔍 Why It’s Being Held
The meeting comes at a time of intensifying security challenges nationwide, including increased incidents of banditry, kidnappings, communal clashes, and other violent crimes.
Officials say the session aims to foster coordination among key national institutions, re-assess security strategies, strengthen policing policies, and ensure more robust responses to threats.
The meeting will also occur soon after the House of Representatives held a public hearing on the proposal for state policing, which is currently a subject of debate across Nigeria.
🔎 What to Watch Out For
-
Whether new directives or reforms emerge from the meeting: e.g. changes in command structure, operations, funding, or oversight of policing.
-
If policy commitments made will translate into immediate action, especially in high-risk states.
-
The degree to which the meeting will address root causes of insecurity (poverty, weak institutions, corruption) versus short-term tactical fixes.
-
How states and security agencies will implement any resolutions, and whether there will be accountability mechanisms.
