Ohanaeze Appeals to FG: Release Nnamdi Kanu for Urgent Medical Treatment

Enugu, Nigeria — Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, has renewed its pleas to the Federal Government to immediately release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), so he can obtain needed medical care. The group expressed concern over his ailing health and the delays in obeying court orders for his treatment.

Key Points

  • Ohanaeze says Kanu’s health is deteriorating and believes his life may be at risk without access to proper medical attention.

  • The organisation reminds the government that court orders have directed that Kanu be granted access to medical services. Ohanaeze accuses authorities of ignoring or delaying compliance.

  • Ohanaeze argues that releasing Kanu won’t threaten Nigeria’s democracy, but rather will serve justice, peace and fairness.

  • The group urges President Bola Tinubu to use his constitutional powers and diplomatic instruments to facilitate Kanu’s release in the interest of equity, social justice, and national cohesion.

Significance & Implications

  • The case remains symbolic for many in the Igbo community, who view the prolonged detention and delayed medical attention as representative of broader grievances about marginalisation and fairness in governance.

  • Ohanaeze’s repeated calls and public pressure may test the government’s sensitivity to human rights, legal rulings, and regional peace.

  • If the government accedes, it could ease tensions in the Southeast, potentially improving trust in the judiciary and executive arms of government.
